Pleasant View School students dominated in the following science competitions that took place this Spring semester.
High School Chemistry Competition:
Students participated in the High School Chemistry Competition. The Memphis Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) held its 50th Annual Competitive Examination in high school chemistry on Mar. 30 at Christian Brothers University. The examinations were administered from 9 to 11:15 a.m. The two-hour examination was given to students selected by their teachers to enter the competition. PVS sent four students to the competition this year. Alhamdulillah, three students ranked among the top ten students: Naisha Chowdhury, Nigere Aizezi, and Emir Celikok.
You Be The Chemist Challenge (YBCC):
Chemical Educational Foundation (CEF) is an organization with a mission ” to build the excitement and value of chemistry and STEM careers with K-8 students through accessible science programs and hands-on experiences.“ Every year in Memphis, middle school students first compete within the school and get selected by the test provided by YBCC. If they qualify, they then go on to the state-level in Murfreesboro, TN to compete against all the other schools. This year, PVS sent Ziad Gnedy and Ismael Qureshi to compete. Ismael Qureshi was the state champion and qualified to go to national-level competition, which will be held June 16-18.
Periodic Table of Moles:
As part of the Chem Club’s 10th Anniversary, each club was asked to create elements of the periodic table featuring a mole. PVS students chose two elements. The students’ work is published in the 2019 Periodic Table of Moles. To celebrate the International Year of the Periodic Table, the PVS Chem Club participated in this effort and submitted Hs (Hassium) and Tb (Terbium) artwork. The artwork was done by Jana Elabiad, Dilare Aizezi and Nigere Aizezi. The idea for the artwork was an effort of all the members of the PVS Chemistry Club 2019. PVS Chemistry Club members include Naisha Chowdhury, Jana Elabiad, Zaid Hadidi, Dilare and Nigere Aizezi, and Emir Celikok.
Middle and High School Science Fair:
The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), a program of Society for Science & the Public (the Society), is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition. While all the results have not yet been finalized, PVS was informed that Naisha Chowdhury won first place overall and will represent the Memphis-Shelby County in the International Science Festival to be held in Phoenix, Arizona in May.
