3rd Grade Summer Reading (2016)

First choose at least TWO books from the reading list below to read over the summer. Then pick
ONE project on one of the books that you have read. You will also be required to take the AR test on one of the books that you have read. These projects may be turned in any day during
the first two weeks of school.


  • Dragon Breath, by Ursula Vernon
  • Runaway Ralph, by Beverly Clearly
  • Stone Fox, by John Reynolds Gardiner
  • The Hundred Dresses, by Eleanor Estes.
  • Zombiekins, by Kevin Bolger

Build a miniature stage setting of a scene in the book. Include a written or typed explanation of the scene. 1⁄2-page to a 1-page paper. Think about the most important parts in the story. Create a comic book. Include pictures and dialogues. Make it colorful.

Create an 8-inch or bigger sculpture of a character in the story. Use any combination of soap, wood, clay, sticks, wire, old toy pieces, or any other object. A 1-page to 1 1⁄2-page explanation of how this character fits into the book should accompany the sculpture.

Choose your favorite scene in the book and write a play. Give a character a brief introduction
before the show.
